Happy Birthday Anchorage Park School!

Anchorage Park School is turning 50 years old so we are having a disco to celebrate at lunch time. We all got to wear mufti today. Looking good room 1!
We had so much fun at the lunch time disco. We got to dance with all our friends.

Delicious Lollies!

This term we are making sweet Christmas Treats for our food technology topic. We went  to see lollies being made at the Old Lolly shop in Takapuna. It was so interesting to see all the stages of lollies being made and we even got to make our own lollipops! YUM! It was so much fun.

Time to dance!

We have been loving dance with our dance specialist Sarah this term! All of us are so enthusiastic this year. We are so great at learning all the moves for our dance and cannot wait to show off our moves at our Christmas assembly.

Hooray it's Genevieve!

Genevieve is coming every Thursday to do Drama with us.  She always has something amazing for us to do and this term she is teaching us all about New Zealand.  This week we played bird calls on whistles, learned about kereru and India dressed up as one.  We practiced the kereu call and flapping our wings.  We played different instruments and explored new sounds. We had so much fun and learned a lot.

We cannot wait until next week!

Welcome back

Welcome back room 1!

It sounds like everyone had a great time with Val teaching them last week, thank you Val!

Rose Anne is back this week and we have been starting to learn about the Olympics.  We have been learning about where it is and all about the Olympic torch.  We made our own Olympic torches and are looking forward to Sommerville's Olympic Opening Ceremony next week.

We read a book called The Best Bug about a ball throwing competition then held our own.  We counted how many steps our beanbag went and wrote our own class book. Matt threw the beanbag 17 steps! Good throw Matt!

Te Oro

Last week we went to Te Oro Arts Centre for our interACT festival. Our class led crayon rubbing and paper weaving sessions and then got to watch other performances and join in with other classes' crafts. It was amazing to see everyone's art on the walls and to see so many artistic performances and ideas. We loved joining in and it was a good opportunity to see our friends in other classes.

Footsteps Dance

Tiana and India have been taking part in weekly dance sessions. They have been doing amazing dancing and have absolutely loved it. They had so much fun dancing this term!

Our Special Assembly Show

Room 5 from Anchorage Park School came to perform their assembly for us. They wore lavalavas and traditional pacific dress. They sang a Samoan song about a butterfly. We loved our special show! Thanks room 5!

dig dig dig the garden.

This week rooms 1 and 2 at Anchorage Park went to plant our vegetable patch. We put in rhubarb, spring onions, leeks, pumpkin seeds and carrots. We love eating food from our garden and cannot wait until they grow!

I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down!!

This week's shared book was 'The Three Little Pigs' We loved seeing the wolf using his breath as a force and trying to work out what force was stronger as we read the story. We acted at being big bad wolves and blowing down Rose Anne's special little houses made out of straw, sticks and bricks. Senele loved acting and wanted to climb a chimney at the end when the wolf tried to get into the brick house.

Our Special Trip

Our shared books this term are fairy tales and our project is forces.  The perfect introduction to both was a trip to Tamaki Campus with all the Sommerville juniors to see 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. We love acting out our fairy tales and it really made us learn so much about pushing and pulling.
There were about 15 classes there and it was brilliant to see all or friends from different satellite and base classes.

Push push pull!

We have been learning all about the forces push and pull in our class. We have found so many things that we push or pull and it makes them move!  Matt pushes the flying fox to make it go.  Opi pushes herself down the slide.  Tiana pushes side to side on the surf board. Everyone pulls the rope to win tug of war!  There are buttons to push, doors to pull and all kinds of toys like cars and scooters to move by pushing or pulling.  We are having lots of fun finding out what forces do what.

Yum Yum!

A huge thank you to all the parents and carers of rooms 1 and 2 who sent in cultural deliciousness for our shared afternoon tea.  All the dishes were so tasty and the pupils loved finding dishes from different countries to try. YUM!

Our Gorgeous Graphs

This term in maths we have been learning about tallies and graphs in maths and cultures in topic.  This week we decided to do a tally to find out all the cultures in room 7 so we went to visit them.  We asked lots of questions and our friends from room 7 stood up when we called their culture, then we tallied them up.  The next day we made those tally marks into a graph.

It is so interesting to see all the cultures in other classes as well as our own, some are the same and some are different.  We also looked to see which cultures had more people and which had fewer.  In our class we have 5 different cultures with one person of each!

Friday 8 April 2016

Our amazing writing!

We all coloured in a Pukeko, we know they are from New Zealand. We used a new iPad app to bring them to life and watched as they walked around our desks and ate worms! Then we wrote about what we saw. We loved it.

Cultural Dress Ups!

We have been learning all abut the different cultures in our class.  As part of our project we have tried on some pretty cool costumes! A couple weeks ago Rose Anne brought in a big kilt and sporran and a tiny kilt and ghillie shirt and a little tartan dress. This week Senele brought in his Dad's lavalava  that he wears at home. We borrowed a lavalava from room 2 so everyone could join in the dressing up.  We had so much fun trying on the costumes and learning about what clothes different cultures wear.

Science in a Van

Today 'Science in a Van' came to visit Achorage Park School. They were amazing!

They taught us about Forces and Friction through experiments and the story 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff'. It was brilliant.

We learned so much and they were hilarious!

Super Swimmers

Today we went to Lloyd Elsmore Pools to practice our swimming. We are really getting on well, most of us are swimming with our face in the water and practicing windmilling our arms as we swim.  Opi was amazing today, even though she felt a bit scared at first, she was standing in the pool holding onto an adult 10 minutes later she was floating on her back with an adult for the VERY FIRST TIME! Well done Opi, you're a superstar!

Maori Culture

We have studied Maori culture for the past 2 weeks. We have made Koru pictures with printing, shells, playdoh and pipe cleaners.  We have also done flax weaving, Maori stick games and explored poi, we found out about traditional clothes too. It has been so much fun!

We even made moko and ta moko masks and pictures of ourselves. India said she was putting koru shapes on hers.  Good remembering India!

Next week we learn about Scottish culture, that's where Rose Anne is from.

Tuesday 1 March 2016

Tiana's Poi

We have looked at Kiwi culture in our Around the World project and now, since Tiana is part Maori, we are looking at Maori culture. It is very interesting and when she brought in her poi it was a perfect opportunity to watch some videos of dances with poi and to practice using some too. Annabelle and Lande quickly made up a few and we all got to practice and find out more about Tiana's cultural background. Tiana is so proud of her poi, they are beautiful Tiana!

We will also be doing lots more Maori art, Maori stick games and will be finding out all about the traditional clothes and music as well as making sure we all learn some new Te reo words or phrases.

Our Weekend News

We absolutely love seeing our friends' photos of their weekend news. It is great to be able to ask questions like "who's that you're with?" and "what is that?" while looking at the photos. Also it is so much easier to talk about what we did when we have a photo up to remind us, and we love using our photos to write about our news too. It is so motivating! This week Matt had a photo of a butterfly that hatched, Tiana brought in her poi to show us and Senele had photos of his family at the Zoo. It was brilliant!

Cultures in our class

This week we have really enjoyed swimming with room 2. We all did such good swimming on and under the water.

In cooking we made healthy sandwiches. They were really yummy and we chose our own healthy toppings.  We are really enjoying making healthy choices in cooking. Matt collected some carrots from our vegetable patch to add to our choices and most of us wanted to eat them, it's so exciting eating the veggies we've grown from seeds!

In topic we are studying the cultures in our class.  We have been studying Kiwiana and seeing what we recognise from our everyday lives.  We are using cultures in our art and music too. In art we are using mixed media to make koru patterns and in music we have started to play maori stick games, it is really tricky to listen to the rhythm and do the right action but we're getting there and enjoying it.

A huge well done to our Superstar of the week: Tiana got a star award for trying so hard in maths with something she found tricky to start with. She worked hard and finally got it. Well done Tiana!
Opi has been amazing at horse riding. She has such good balance and really enjoys riding her horse, Venus. The horses love Opi too and even wrote her a letter to welcome her back to riding again this term.

Friday 12 February 2016

What a busy week!

This week we have been really busy learning and having lots of fun.

In cooking we made and ate spaghetti on toast, it as really yummy!  After cooking we went outside for developmental, we practiced more pouring at the sand and water tables.

In music we listened to some music from around the world. Tiana loved the bagpipe music and started to dance and Opi really got into the Indian music. Matt loved playing the shakers and Senele loved banging his drum while India had great rhythm with her instrument.

We went out to the obstacle course to show Yolande how we balanced, climbed crawled and jumped and did a great job following instructions.

Our star award winner this week was Senele for amazing reading and lots of talking. He read his books well all week and is recognising his sight words amazingly!

Getting back on the horse

This week Opi was lucky enough to start her horse riding sessions for the year.  She had a fantastic time riding her horse, socialising with the other riders and staff members and meeting new people. The horses even wrote her a letter! I think they're waiting for a reply so they can write again. Opi sits so well on the horse, we're all very impressed with her

First superstar award of the year!

Congratulations Matt on getting the first star award of the year! You tried so hard with your writing this week. Well done. It was a really tough decision as so many people were stars in our class this week

Saturday 6 February 2016

We're glad to be back!

Welcome to our new friend Yolande who has come to help us with our learning this year! We have had lots of fun getting to know her and introducing ourselves to her. We've had a fantastic first week and have settled back into our routine very quickly.
